Capital Business: DC News Wars Heat Up

The Washington Post announced a new weekly print business vehicle — Capital Business. It’ll be free to Post 7-day subscribers and $49 a year for others. A fresh foray into business journalism makes a lot of sense. It’s an area local dailies have largely ceded to national websites, and with that ceding go lots of ad dollars. The Post says it will concentrate on key DC industries: government contracting, technology, finance, commercial real estate, national associations and the legal community. Interpret the move as both a grab for needed growth and a flank better protected as the Jim Brady-led Allbritton DC online start-up starts publishing in the spring.

One strong competitor is the Washington Business Journal, one of 40 Advance-owned American City Business Journal properties, a group that seems to have weathered the recession better than general news operations. (Good Talkin’ Biz News interview with ACBJ head Whitney Shaw, here.)
