Will: Sorry for the sloppiness. I shouldn't have tossed the two papers together so casually; you're right. I should have focused my "old school" comments more specifically, and around the community organizing aspects of what daily newspapers are and aren't doing. Ken

Ken,

I'm stunned that you -- with so much knowledge of the situation -- would write this -- "the Philadelphia operation now run by publisher Brian Tierney and editor Bill Marimow" -- when you know that Marimow runs only one of the two papers in Phila. You also know that the other, the Daily News edited by Michael Days -- just won the Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting for exactly the kind of local, shoe-leather journalism that the city does indeed need more of. The J-Lab report, while noting our staffing and news-hole problem, did praise the kind of reporting that our small staff is still able to do. I can't stress this enough -- as there's a chance we could be under new ownership as soon as next week and it's critical that people from outside the city understand what a rare and prioeless civic asset the Daily News is.
