That’s the number of companies Google has bought since January, 2009. Its latest acquisition is Jambool, a social payments site.

That doesn’t surprise me. But I’m wondering if they’re taking their eye off the ball. The company arrived at the party of big players because it has the most popular search engine. It needs to focus on what got it there — its search engine — not every company that comes along to be purchased.

In the year that I spent working for a San Francisco-based website — and attempting to get it funded by Silicon Valley venture capitalists — what I learned is that every venture capitalist is looking to invest in a company that can be sold to Google.

The phones must ring off the hook at Google from some venture capitalists attempting to sell them something. Or maybe they’re sending e-mails and text messages. Who knows?

Google’s stock is hurting. They need to stick with what got them to the party — a great search engine.
