Joe: Sorry for tardy reply. The biggest point, I think, is that there is a wealth of news creation going on in the Philly region, by a variety of players, some with good journalistic roots and goals. I think the role of a regional daily in aggregating/rounding up/helping other news players is one way forward, and I've noted newspaper-led projects in Seattle and in Miami that work with such players in their areas. With the new ownership, I think there's a good match to be made there, and that the J-Lab report summed up well that potential.

What did you find useful in the J-Lab report, Ken? As I recall the report consisted of the author's generalized complaints against her ex colleagues, and unnamed powerful Philadelphians complaining about the way the Inquirer covers them. Is that a model for how journalism ought to work?

"Note that only is “Newspapers” capped, unusual in Philly style, but ironically, the new owners made clear that it was the digital future that they were investing in. "

Uh, the company name is Philadelphia Newspapers L.L.C. So, why not "Phila. Newspapers" in the hed?

Ken: "Phila. Newspapers" uppercase would refer to the company, Philadelphia Newspapers L.L.C. Inquirer style would be "Phila. newspapers" in referring to the papers generically. No hidden meaning about the importance of print. Either it was meant to refer to the company's being sold to new owners, or it was a typo, possibly a different Webhed from the pritn head. Even those of us who are diehard print lovers at 400 N. Broad are not as hidebound as your article might be seen as indicating -- and our jobs already involve varied methods of origination and presentation, of course.
