Thinking Outside the (Newspaper) (Coin) Box

Lost in the digital rush has been the growing head-to-head local print competition among America’s three national papers. While the Wall Street Journal and New York Times take on each other more directly in the Bay Area, Chicago and now metro New York, USA Today — which took a punishing 17% circulation loss last fall — has made a Starbucks strike.

You know, how you could always depend on a Starbucks to get a Sunday Times (for just double the price of a tall latte), and the local paper. Now, USA Today will be found on the racks in 650 stores as well.

Good piece by AdAge’s Nat Ives on the caffeinated circ push, and a bonus great (first) comment from Gary in Chicago, who suggest that “each Starbucks location buys 10+ iPads. Then they rent them out to us – their consumers – by the hour…. by allowing us to access an iPad, we can then look through any and all newspaper(s) we’d like”.

Great idea. The first circ department to hire this guy won’t be disappointed.
